During the second half of the twentieth century, a perfect storm of technological development, increasingly refined craftsmanship, and growing demand meant that quality lightweight frames were produced in large numbers to a very high standard. The industry, like almost all others has changed beyond recognition, with materials, manufacturing techniques, and shareholders’ demands for returns often rendering modern machine-built bicycles brute, functional objects, rather than the repositories for romance and history that they once were. Our aim is to repurpose these handbuilt versatile frames in to bicycles that do them justice, and allow them to continue being ridden for as long as they are maintained.
We use frames and parts from a variety of eras, and are not averse to mixing these, where doing so will satisfy the design brief without compromising or undermining the spirit of the machine. The bikes available for sale here and those we have previously sold (some of which can be seen on our blog and our Instagram feed) should serve to indicate how these design choices can work.
Our custom builds start from about £750. We don’t use any low quality or heavily used parts, and all the wearable parts (tyres, pads, cables, drivetrain and so on) are brand new. We are flexible in how we work - you can outline the sort of build you’re after and we will do the rest, or you can be involved in every step of the process, speccing out the bicycle down to the smallest details. After initial consultation by phone and email, we plan and price the build as discussed. Once the final build is decided, and you’re happy to proceed, we ask for a 25% deposit to get things underway.
