Description

Bates Cycles began life in Plaistow in 1926 and relocated to Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex in 1954. The B.A.R. (Best All Rounder) frame was their top-of-the-range road model and featured the innovations for which they were so famed: the proprietary Cantiflex tubing (cigar shaped to offer increased stiffness in the main triangle of the frame) and Diadrant forks (their distinctive shape promising unmatched shock absorption and directness of steering). Lots more information on the brand at classiclightweights.co.uk. B.A.R. frames won countless races in the pre- and post-war periods, but were well suited to longer days out and handle well with luggage on board. Some pitting visible under the new paint.
